Less is More – Entry Reveal Phase 1
When you have a tiny house a grand entry way isn’t really a thing. With three kids, they were coming in and out throwing their shoes everywhere and it was driving me mad! I went with the idea that you don’t always have to use traditional pieces to store away shoes and accessories. Make it work with what you want! So here’s a peak at our entry way, why sometimes less is more when decorating, and why it’s only phase 1 of the final plan.
If you follow me on Instagram you probably saw how we redid the carpet from an older light shaggy style (seen below) to this darker carpet.
But this isn’t the color I had in mind when we originally thought to get these done. We really wanted to give it a “pop” from your conventional home of hard wood floors and stair runners that are the norm these days. Plus after falling down these stairs a few times ourselves, carpet just seemed like a better idea right now with kids for the time being.
But, this carpet is BLUE! Definitely not the color we had in mind (blackish-gray) and thus our first design mistake happened! Don’t get me wrong I know a lot of people really said they liked the look but it just wasn’t the vision I had in my head and now I just can’t quite grow to love the color.
So, we will probably be changing the carpet again within the next couple months. (Don’t hate me those that love it, lol).
With such a tiny house there really isn’t a lot of room to work with when you first walk in. There is a tiny coat closet to the left but by tiny I mean it barely fits my vacuum ? . So we had to come up with a way that was functional but also pleasing to the eye.
We love Ikea. I know many people don’t for quality but it works for us and our budget. They have some really good and practical design ideas for smaller spaces at reasonable prices.
We opted for this Ikea Besta cabinet to house the kids’ shoes, games, and a spot for mail.
The faux concrete look really adds a bit of modern. It was easy to put together as well. A lot of people use the Besta as entertainment centers but this really does a good job at hiding away about 10 pairs of shoes, coloring books, games, and other little nick-nacks.
I really love adding pieces of vintage with modern elements. It feels both classy and with-the-times when together. We found this beautiful brass angel lamp at an antique store and immediately fell for it.
When decorating an entry way I’ve learned that you really want to focus on proportions. I knew that we needed to go bigger with accessories because anything too small tends to start looking like clutter. Thus the importance of less is more.
So we went with a bigger vase (similar) and a mirror that would fill the spot as much as it could on the stair wall. You also can’t go wrong with a candle. My goal is to make someone walk in and say “wow it smells great in here.” And it gives it that cozy vibe immediately as you walk into a space. The coral piece just fit the Cali life without going all out beach house.
The reason I say it’s phase one is because sadly this piece hits the bathroom door after they installed the new carpet and padding so we either will end up selling or trying to relocate. Also, the railing will get a refresh hopefully within the next year (most excited about that!) and of course another carpet change, lol.
I can’t wait to share the progress and updates to inspire and challenge you to not be afraid to take risks in your home. Whether it works out or not it’s all about learning what you love and don’t to make your home truly yours.
Well done. Love the transformation with the blue carpet looks great. Nice find with with Ikea Besta. Your place looks great. Can’t wait to see how it evolves.
