Powder Room or Half Bath: What’s the Difference? & Our Hidden Powder Room Bathroom Plans
Does your home have a powder room? Beneath the staircase of our house, right as you walk in the door to the left, is a hidden powder bathroom. It’s small but the easiest spot to begin with that doesn’t need any structural work aside from a new window.
Powder Room or Half Bath: What’s the Difference?
Not really, they pretty much mean the same thing. Back in the day, 1920s to be more exact, the term powder room began being used as a euphemism for the ladies’ room, because as you know, women don’t poop. So the term drew attention instead on the place for women to go and retouch their makeup. A powder room or half bath is typically on the first floor and reserved primarily for guests containing only a sink and toilet.Â
Current State
Our sinks are raised (not a big fan of it) but we really don’t want to redo them considering they aren’t terrible….just…not my style. And the cabinets are older and need updating but that can wait till later as they work for now.Â
So here is the plan of what we choose to work with:
House Of Hackney Zeus WallpaperÂ
Why Wallpaper?
Wallpaper can add such a statement to a room. Especially a smaller bathroom. Gone are the days of wallpaper being “out-of-style.” I love the detail of the birds and originally found this wallpaper from a blog post from an interior designer, AnneMarie Barton, down below. I immediately was drawn to it even though I was considering more of a flower design at first. This was just the ONE!Â
Not gonna deny it’s on the pricer side but I always like to go with the rule of buying one statement piece per room. So this definitely was it for this space.
Hoping to start in here at the end of the month as soon as everything comes in!Â

Sadly we don’t have a powder room but our bathroom sinks are similar to yours. I love your mood board…especially the rug!
I’ll be honest, I use these terms interchangeably! Either way, I am ALL for a pretty wall papered bathroom.
I honestly did not know there was a difference. Thanks for all the info.
Honestly? I get the raised sink thing. And if it weren’t for kids, I would probably LOVE them!
I go back and forth on if I like raised sinks or not. I guess it depends on the bathroom and set up? Definitely not kid friendly
Yes, thats defiantly the part I dislike the most. Not kid friendly at all.
I love the wallpaper idea and the raised sink! My children are a little short for them too, but I notice this is the style that everyone is using now.
